No. 2 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, Puyallup got a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts from MaxPreps National Player of the Year candidate
Mason Pike in the state tournament opener against
Moses Lake. The Vikings then rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to defeat
Lake Stevens 7-6. That sends them to the Class 4A semifinals and a meeting with
Lake Washington (Kirkland) on Friday.
Corona, meanwhile, got an impressive performance from its own POY candidate
Seth Hernandez. In an 11-2 win over
Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga) in the second round of the Southern Section Division 1 tournament, Hernandez hit two home runs with six RBI and also struck out 10 batters for the pitching win.
Puyallup and Corona have the best chance to knock
IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) off its perch at No. 1. Puyallup's potential undefeated season would be an impressive line on its resume while Corona's potential run through, perhaps, the toughest postseason tournament in the nation would weigh in its favor.
IMG Academy's strong points include wins over state champions
The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.),
Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.),
St. John's (Washington, D.C.), and
Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, Miss.).
A total of four teams moved into the rankings this week.
Grapevine and
Kingwood have emerged as favorites in their respective brackets in Texas.
Miami Springs (Fla.) joined the MaxPreps Top 25 for the first time this year after back-to-back wins over
Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) and
South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.). Aforementioned Blessed Trinity returned to the rankings after winning the Georgia AAAA championship.
Game of the week: Blessed Trinity def.
Cartersville (Ga.), 7-6. The Titans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. In the bottom of the eighth,
Carson Zagryn singled with two outs to score
Andrew Cochran from second base. The win gave Blessed Trinity the Class AAAA championship.
Game to watch: St. John Bosco vs. Corona. Winners of arguably the toughest league in the nation, St. John Bosco went 14-1 in Trinity League play. Ranked No. 9 this week, the Braves take on Corona.
Pitcher of the week: Mason Pike, Puyallup. The Viking senior improved his record to 11-0 with his best outing of the season. He struck out 17 in a seven-inning no-hitter against Moses Lake in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. He now has 110 strikeouts and a 0.22 ERA on the season.
Hitter of the week: Seth Hernandez, Corona. Known more for his pitching, Hernandez can also swing a bat. The Panther senior belted two home runs with six RBI in an 11-2 win over Los Osos. He has seven home runs on the season.
Streaks:
Hempfield (Landisville, Pa.) had its 29-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-5 loss to
Cedar Cliff (Camp Hill). That left
Blanchard (Okla.), which finished its season May 17 with a Class 4A state championship, as the active leader with 27 wins in a row. However, Puyallup passed Blanchard on Saturday with a pair of wins to give the Vikings 28 wins in a row.
