Video: Top 10 plays of 2015-16Breaking down the year's wildest high school sports highlights. With the conclusion of the Minnesota state championships on Monday, Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) is officially the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
The Bears produced the best record in school history at 30-1, topping the 30-2 record from 2011. Buchanan lost just once all season, falling to Clovis North. However, Buchanan defeated Clovis North three other times, including a 4-0 win in the Central Section Division I championship game.
Buchanan edges a Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) team that lost its top player, pitcher and MLB draftee Jesus Luzardo, early in the season to an arm injury, but still managed to win the school's first state championship.
Another Florida team, Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), comes in at No. 3 with its sixth state championship in seven seasons. The Mavericks, with a high number of underclassmen on the roster, are the favorite to begin the 2017 season at No. 1 in the preseason rankings.
The only new team to this week's rankings is Wayzata (Minn.), which won the Class 4A state championship Monday night at Target Field. Wayzata enters the rankings at No. 50, replacing Zionsville (Ind.), which lost in the Indiana Class 4A state finals.
