Video: Fair or foul? Clutch, walk-off home run in 11th inningLovett advances to meet Wesleyan in Georgia's 6-AA championship series. Senior
Aaron Schunk of
Lovett (Atlanta, Ga.) knew his team was in trouble during an extra innings battle against Greater Atlanta Christian, down 1-0 in a best-of-three state semifinals series.
But it only takes one swing to change a baseball game and in this case, an entire season.
The Georgia commit lifted a fastball high and deep toward left field. Schunk stood anxiously with his mighty bat resting by his side as he watched his team's fate take flight.
"The ball went off my bat, and I knew it had a chance," Schunk said. "I was just standing there in the batters box for so long. I was praying it stayed fair because I knew it could possibly be my last high school at bat."
The ball sailed down the line for what felt like eternity. Finally, the ball stayed true and cleared the fence. Schunk joyously flipped the bat as the crowd erupted in excitement.
"When I saw it stay fair I was overjoyed. It was a pure rush and one of the best moments of my life. I was so happy that I had given our team a chance to keep playing."
The Lions won the emotional game 3-2 and wound up taking the series.
Lovett will tussle with Wesleyan on Saturday in Game 1 of the 6-AA state championship.
