The biggest high school football game of the year is set as No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) hosts No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) on Oct. 7 at Santa Ana Bowl. The Braves and Monarchs each improved to 6-0 last week.
Bosco beat Servite (Anaheim) 49-3 and has outscored its first six opponents 291-31. Mater Dei was in a much tighter contest but won its 23rd straight game, 21-13 over JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano). These two Trinity League powers have a combined 48 players who are rated as a three-star recruit or higher on 247Sports. The Braves have 28 while the Monarchs have 20.
Mater Dei has won seven of the last 10 meetings, including two in a row. The last time these two played as the top two teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 was in 2019 when Clemson quarterback
D.J. Uiagalelei led the Braves a 39-34 comeback win in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. St. John Bosco trailed 28-5 late in the first half but Uiagalelei led the way throwing for 446 yards and five touchdowns.
No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) finished its five game road trip to start the 2022 season with a 22-15 comeback win in Hawaii against Kahuku. The Panthers trailed 15-8 in the fourth quarter but
Da’shawn Womack returned a fumble 79-yards for a score to cut the deficit to 15-14 with just under eight minutes remaining.
Michael Van Buren led St. Frances on a 84-yard drive capped off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Kyree Benton for the game-winning score with 39 seconds remaining.
Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.) and Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) become the fourth teams from Georgia and California, respectively, to join the MaxPreps Top 25. They replace St. John's (Washington, D.C.) and Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
Sean Calhoun has led the Packers to a 6-0 start in his first season as head coach. They have outscored their first six opponents 224-64 and have won every game by at least 21 points. They have notable wins against Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.) and Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga.).
Long Beach Poly joins the MaxPreps Top 25 for the first time since
Matt Corral was the quarterback in 2017. The Jackrabbits are the fourth team from SoCal to join the national rankings and are 6-0 on the season. Loaded with talent led by
Jason Robinson Jr.,
Dylan Williams,
Daylen Austin,
Darius Curry,
Devin Samples,
Jadyn Robinson and
Tyson Ruffins, Poly had a notable 35-30 road win at Mission Viejo (Calif.) in early September.

Long Beach Poly is the fourth California team to join the MaxPreps Top 25 and it's the first time since 2017 the Jackrabbits are ranked nationally.
