The battle for the No. 1 ranking nationally didn't deliver fireworks, but rather a defensive slugfest as No. 2
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) used a clock-killing drive late in the fourth to preserve a 17-7 win over No. 1
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in the biggest high school football game of the season.
Mater Dei got a last-second score from
Jordon Davison
to make the score academic, but the game was tight throughout. The win
likely vaults Mater Dei to No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings
on Monday, but this probably isn't the last time the two meet as it's
expected they both earn a trip to the CIF Southern Section Division I
title game on Nov. 25 at the Rose Bowl.
With
the win, Mater Dei has now won three straight against its Trinity League
rival and eight of the past 11 dating back to 2016. Monarchs
quarterback
Elijah Brown is 24-0 in his high school career, including the 3-0 mark against St. John Bosco.
Some other big matchups involving MaxPreps Top 25 teams saw No. 4 Central (Miami) beat Northwestern (Miami) 42-7 at Traz Powell Stadium on Friday. In another marquee Florida contest No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) downed Dillard (Fort Lauderdale) 24-6.
Five-star Ohio State commit
Dylan Raiola and No. 9 Chandler (Ariz.) had their road test at Casteel (Queen Creek, Ariz.) postponed until Saturday. No. 23 Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) escaped with a 38-35 win over Keller (Texas).
