Video: California teams play 19-inning gameWatch Drake and Marin Catholic participate in one of the longest games of the season. Both schools have players on this year's Medium Schools All-State Baseball Teams.
Matthew Sauer completed a spectacular season at Righetti (Santa Maria) that included national honors, eye-popping stats and selection in the Major League Baseball Draft.
About the only thing that didn't go well for Sauer was the CIF Southern Section Division 3 championship game, in which Righetti lost a 13-2 decision to Walnut in a game in which he did not pitch. Otherwise, it was an MVP season for the 6-foot-4, 195-pound pitcher who is the MaxPreps California Medium Schools Player of the Year.
Sauer boasted a 9-1 pitching record with 142 strikeouts and was the top player by Lee Central Coast Newspapers in the Santa Mara area for the past two seasons. This year, Sauer also earned All-Region honors by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association.
He finalized his high school career by going to the New York Yankees with the No. 54 overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Rich Henning of Christian Brothers (Sacramento) is the Medium Schools Coach of the Year. He led the Falcons to a 29-2 record and a Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 championship. He was also named the All-Metro Coach of the Year by the Sacramento Bee.
The Medium Schools All-State Teams include athletes who play for schools that participate in enrollment divisions that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
