The Sierra Chieftains are taking a road trip to face off against the Shafter Generals at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sierra is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Sierra is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Yosemite, sneaking past 6-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Chieftains.
Wyatt Young made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zach Lloyd, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Daniel Blue, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double.
Sierra kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Shafter made easy work of Dos Palos on Tuesday and carried off a 9-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Generals, who have now won 11 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Henry Wiebe spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Shafter's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Andy Gomez, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Noah Bill was another, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs.
Sierra's record now sits at 22-8. As for Shafter, their record is now 18-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sierra has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Shafter struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Sierra's way against Shafter in their previous meeting back in March of 2016, as Sierra made off with a 23-2 win. Do the Chieftains have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Generals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
