MaxPreps Top 25 high school football scores: No. 2 Mater Dei beats No. 7 Corona Centennial 43-20

For the second straight week, No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) faced another top 10 opponent on the road and rolled to another win. They took down No. 8 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 24-21 last week and beat No. 7 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) 43-20 this week. Junior quarterback Elijah Brown improved his record to 20-0.

Another MaxPreps Top 25 matchup featured No. 14 Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and No. 19 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) and the Crusaders cruised to a dominant 28-7 win in a matchup of defending state champions. The defending Non-Public A champs made the 2,000-plus mile trip and made a statement to improve its win streak to 15.

Four-star running back Justice Haynes and No. 6 Buford (Ga.) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead over North Cobb (Kennesaw, Ga.) but Malachi Singleton and the Warriors tied it up with six minutes remaining. Haynes scored his third touchdown of the night in the final minute to give the sixth-ranked Wolves the game-winning score to improve to 3-0.

No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) answered its 52-14 win over Allen (Texas) with a one-sided 42-7 win over Bishop Amat (La Puente) to improve to 2-0 and have games lined up against Central Catholic (Portland), Kahuku (Hawaii) and Central Catholic (Modesto) before an Oct. 7 showdown vs. No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana).

No. 10 Chandler (Ariz.) made a trip to San Diego and took down Cathedral Catholic (Calif.) 63-7 in the Honor Bowl. Dylan Raiola was named the MVP and accounted for four total touchdowns. The 2024 Ohio State commit is the top-rated player among all juniors on every recruiting site.

No. 23 Katy (Texas) pulled out a huge 35-28 win over Atascocita (Humble) in a back-and-forth contest. Mississippi State-pledge Seth Davis rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

Seven MaxPreps Top 25 teams play on Saturday and some notable games included No. 22 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) escaping with a 13-9 victory over Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.). Casey Bullock scored the game-winning touchdown from one-yard out with 1:22 left.

No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) made a statement in Texas beating DeSoto (Texas) 47-7. Michael Van Buren threw for three scores with two going to Ryan Manning and the other to Mekhi Workman. Durell Robinson had a monster night and rushed for two touchdowns, including one from 74 yards. DeJuan Williams and Nicholas Harris added rushing scores too.

No. 13 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) bounced back with a 50-6 win over De Smet Jesuit (St. Louis) after a 20-14 loss against Central (Miami) last week. Sophomore standout Winston Watkins Jr. had three touchdowns and up next for the Ascenders is a trip to Utah to face East (Salt Lake City) on Sept. 9.
