Virginia High School Volleyball - New Kent can't hold off Bruton
August 30, 2022: New Kent, VA 23124 In Tuesday's league battle, the visiting Bruton Panthers volleyball team scored a tight 3-2 triumph over the New Kent Trojans.
The Panthers (3-0) will now prepare for their battle against Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA). The Rams come into the Bay Rivers battle with a 1-2 record. In their last battle, Lafayette was edged by Warhill (Williamsburg, VA), 3-0, in a league battle.
Next, the Trojans clash with the Tabb Tigers (Yorktown, VA) in a Bay Rivers battle, on Thursday, September 1. New Kent will attempt to advance on its 0-1 season record. The Tigers come into the battle with a 2-4 record after their 3-1 league loss to York (Yorktown, VA).
Match Summary
The New Kent Lady Trojans lost a close five-set match to the Bruton Panthers in their season opener. Bruton won the first two sets by two points each set, 25-23, while New Kent came back and won the next two sets by 11 points, 25-14 in both.
During the fifth, 15-point set, both teams started off showing their early-season nervers, missing four out of five first serves between them. Bruton pulled ahead 11-7 before NK rallied to closed to 12-13. With NK serving, Bruton forced a New Kent digging error then with Bruton serving for the match, New Kent managed two attacks that were returned by Bruton before a New Kent hitting error gave Bruton the final point. Stats leaders for the Lady Trojans included Aubrey Hyndshaw with 19 kills, Lexi Powell with 6 aces, Sophie McLaughlin with 27 digs, and setters Mackenzie Loveland and Hannah Perkins with 17 and 18 assists respectively.
