High school football: Best team from all 50 states entering the 2022 season

The Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 was released last month highlighting the nation's top high school football teams. Now we are zoning in on the local level and identifying the best team in all 50 states along with Washington, D.C. Find out who earned the nod in your state below.

Included in the list is preseason national No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). The Braves extended their streak of finishing ranked among the nation's top 10 for the sixth consecutive year in 2021, the longest active streak in high school football.

St. John Bosco enters the 2022 season with 29 players rated as a three-star or higher on 247Sports for the Classes of 2023 and 2024.

Our preview of the 2022 campaign continues next week as we start looking at the top 10 by position, starting with the quarterbacks on July 11.

Alabama — Thompson (Alabaster)
Three-time defending 7A state champs begin the year at No. 14 in MaxPreps Top 25.



The Thunderbirds won their fourth state since 2016 last season.

Arizona — Chandler
Had its streak of five consecutive state titles come to an end last year, but will be factor in 2022 with five-star Ohio State commit Dylan Raiola under center.

Arkansas — Bryant
The Hornets have won 41 consecutive games against in-state opponents and seek a fifth straight 7A state title.

The Braves begin the 2022 season atop the MaxPreps Top 25.

The Bruins have won three consecutive 5A state titles and are the only team from Colorado ranked in our expanded top 100.

The Pelicans have six players rated as a three-star or higher, led by Olaus Alinen and Dante Reno.



Delaware — Middletown
The defending 3A champs face three big out-of-state opponents with matchups against No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), No. 18 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) and Massillon Washington (Ohio).

District of Columbia — St. John's
The Cadets are coming off an 11-0 season and return a host of key defensive players on a squad that allowed less than seven points per game.

The Ascenders have 15 players on 247Sports composite rankings for the Classes of 2023 and 2024 rated in the top 100 overall.

Georgia — Buford
Bryant Appling has led Wolves to three consecutive state titles and has his most talented team yet.

Hawaii — Kahuku
The Red Raiders dominated in-state opponents in 2021 outscoring the opposition 449-98, including a 49-14 win over St. Louis (Honolulu) in the Open Division state championship.

Idaho — Rigby
Defending 5A champs have won two state titles over the last three years. The Trojans have another big-time quarterback in Luke Flowers, who recently landed his first FBS offer from Arizona in June.

Illinois — East St. Louis
Miles McVay and Paris Patterson give the Flyers one of the best offensive lines in the Midwest to go with Class of 2024 standout Robert "Pops" Battle under center.

The back-to-back 5A state champs return a lot of talent led by three-star quarterback Danny O'Neil. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2021.

Iowa — Ankeny
The Hawks finished as 5A runner-up and will be one of the favorites in 2022 with four-star J.J. Kohl under center. The 2023 Iowa State commit had an impressive showing at the Elite 11 Finals last week.

Kansas — Derby
Went 11-1 in 2021 and four-star running back Dylan Edwards is among a number of key returners. The 2023 Kansas State commit rushed for over 2,600 yards and 38 touchdowns.



Kentucky — Male (Louisville)
The Bulldogs are 49-5 since 2018 and the only team from Kentucky ranked in our expanded top 100.

David Simoneaux led the Bears to a 12-1 record and Division 1 state title in his first year as head coach and returns a lot of talent led by Daniel Beale, Harold Lawson and Shelton Sampson Jr.

Maine — Cape Elizabeth
Defending Class C state champs have to replace some key pieces but return one of the best players in Maine in Nick Laughlin. He finished last season with nearly 1,400 total yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the team in tackles with 80.

The Panthers are 42-2 since 2017 and begin the season at No. 3 in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Datrell Jones, Guerby Lambert, Jaedn Skeete and Boubacar Traore are all back after going 12-0 and winning the Division 2 state title in 2021.

Michigan — King (Detroit)
Dante Moore, the 2021 MaxPreps Michigan Player of the Year, is back under center for the defending Division III state champs. The five-star quarterback threw for over 3,000 yards and 40 touchdowns last season.

The Cougars have won 21 games in a row and have one of the best players in the state back for his senior year in 2023 Iowa State commit Carson Hansen. He's rushed for 2,828 yards and 37 touchdowns during the winning streak.

The defending 6A state champs return leading passer (Vic Sutton), rusher (De'Andre Pullen) and receiver (Isaiah Spencer).



After a season-opening loss against East St. Louis (Ill.) the Cadets reeled of 13 straight wins to claim their fourth Class 6 state title since 2014.

Montana — Hamilton
The defending Class A state champs went 11-0 in 2021 and won each game by 14 points or more.

Nebraska — Gretna
The Dragons won the Class A state title last season but had to vacate because of an ineligible player. They return a host of key players led by Oklahoma State-bound quarterback Zane Flores and his top-two receivers from 2021 in Joe Roll and Caleb Schnell.

The 2021 MaxPreps Nevada Player of the Year Zachariah Branch and MaxPreps Sophomore All-American Micah Alejado are just a couple of the notable players on a team that begins the 2022 season ranked No. 6.

New Hampshire — Pelham
The back-to-back Division III state champs have won 17 straight, outscoring the opposition 711-65 during that span.

The Crusaders finished last season at No. 3 in the MaxPreps Top 25 and are loaded again on defense, led by four-star defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell and three-star edge rusher D.J. Samuels.

New Mexico — Cleveland (Rio Rancho)
The Storm haven't lost a game since the 2019 regular season and the 2021 MaxPreps New Mexico Player of the Year Evan Wysong and MaxPreps Sophomore All-American Strat Shufelt both return.

The Gaels lone loss last season came against New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey) and return a lot of talent led by the New York MaxPreps Player of the Year Ajani Sheppard and 2023 Syracuse commit Zyian Moultrie-Goddard.

North Carolina — Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh)
Connor Clark is back under center after leading the Crusaders to their first state title. He threw for nearly 2,800 yards and 30 touchdowns last season.



North Dakota — Kindred
The Vikings won the school's first state title last season and the 2021 MaxPreps North Dakota Player of the Year Trey Heinrich has them in position to repeat in 2022.

The Eagles are defending Division 1 state champs are the lone Ohio team to begin the year in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Oklahoma — Bixby
The Spartans begin the 2022 season with the second-longest active win streak in the country at 49 victories.

There was no postseason in Oregon during the 2020 season and the Rams have won the last two 6A state titles.

The Hawks have made it to the 6A state championship game six consecutive years and have gone 69-6 winning four state titles during that span.

The Hawks have not lost to an in-state opponent since 2017 and have won four straight state titles.

South Carolina — Dutch Fork (Irmo)
The Silver Foxes have gone 77-2-1 since 2016 and won five 5A state titles.

South Dakota — Harrisburg
The defending 11AAA champs won their first state title since 1999 and all-state running back Gavin Ross returns after accounting for 2,185 total yards and 24 touchdowns.

Trent Dilfer has done a tremendous job as head coach, leading the Mustangs to a 24-4 record over the last two seasons after going 7-6 in his first year. They won the school's first state title since 2007 last season.

The Texas power has won 40 consecutive games and three straight state titles.



Eric Kjar has led the Chargers to a 63-3 record and three state titles since becoming head coach before the 2017 season.

Vermont — Rutland
The Raiders returns a lot of talent from a team that went 8-1 in 2021.

Chris Scott has led the Virginia power to a couple of state titles and 35-3 record during his first three years as head coach.

Washington — Lake Stevens
The 4A state runner-up will be in the mix again with 2023 Notre Dame commit Jayden Limar back.

West Virginia — Martinsburg
The Bulldogs have won nine state titles since 2010, going 148-11.

The defending Division 4 state champs return a lot of talent led by the top-two ranked players in Wisconsin on 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2024 — Donovan Harbour and Corey Smith.

Wyoming — Cody
The back-to-back 3A champs have won four state titles since 2014 and seven overall.
