High school football rankings: Mater Dei holds No. 1 spot in this week's media composite top 25

No. 2 Bishop Gorman could slide into top slot if Monarchs lose to Serra on Saturday in CIF Open Division finals.

California wraps up its high school football season this weekend and the results could have an impact on the Top 25 media composite rankings.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) takes on No. 23 Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) in the CIF Open Division state championship on Saturday night. If the Monarchs lose to the Padres at Saddleback College, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), sitting at No. 2 this week, would likely be the consensus top team in the country. If Mater Dei rolls to a victory, it likely would lock up the media composite's top spot.

Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) and Bixby (Okla.) are new to this week's Top 25 media composite rankings. The New Jersey power won the Non-Public A state championship to close out its season. After an early season loss to No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.), the Crusaders won nine straight.

The Spartans finished off a remarkable 13-0 year, a second consecutive Oklahoma 6A-I title and ninth overall championship in 10 years. Kordell Gouldsby had five touchdowns during their 49-21 title-game victory over Jenks.

The media composite top 25 takes into account a wide range of approaches to high school football rankings by six different outlets. That includes computer algorithms by CalPreps and High School Football America as well as expert rankings from MaxPreps, USAToday, Blue Star Media and National HSFB.

To be considered for the rankings a team must be recognized by two or more media outlets. Teams were assigned a score of 40 for each media outlet that did not recognize them as part of their top 25, rewarding teams that received consensus acclaim.
