High school basketball rankings: Expanding the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 all the way to 100

Thirty states and the District of Columbia represented in expanded look at the nation's top teams.

The Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 high school basketball rankings were released last week and we now expand our look at the next 75 best in the game.

The teams in the top 100 all have excellent pedigree, a tradition of success and big-time players fueling expectations of jumping into the MaxPreps Top 25 as the season progresses. Some are returning state champions while others are top contenders to bring home a title in 2022-23.

Our expanded list is dominated by five states — California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. That quintet combined to place 37 teams on the list.
 
In total, 30 different states along with the District of Columbia are represented. Twenty-five of the 30 states had multiple teams selected and Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania each had four or more teams on the list.

1. Columbus (Miami, Fla.)
2022-23: 26-4, No. 8 in final rankings
Begin the season as the team to beat in high school basketball behind Cameron Boozer and a strong supporting cast. The Explorers boast one of the toughest schedules in the nation.

2022-23: 22-3, No. 3 in final rankings
After a second-place finish in the NIBC, the Crusaders look to build on their success behind a loaded roster led by reigning NIBC Player of the Year V.J. Edgecombe.

The Vikings return three starters from a team that reached the Class 4A state semifinals as five-star Duke commit Isaiah Evans, senior guard Trey Maxwell and sophomore guard Ashton Pierce are primed for big seasons.



2022-23: 31-1, No. 48 in final rankings
Heavy favorite to repeat as Class 4A state champions returns four starters headlined by three-star Pittsburgh commit Brandin Cummings and five-star junior Meleek Thomas.

One of the top-ranked teams from the DMV area, the Bulldogs feature a talented roster led by Holy Cross commit Tyler Boston, Old Dominion commit Caden Diggs and top 150 junior Eric Reibe.

Top 25 sophomore J.J. Andrews and three-star Louisiana Tech commit Landren Blocker return to lead the defending Class 4A state champions.

Defending Class 6A state champions return four starters from last season headlined by No. 3-ranked sophomore Caleb Holt.

The Stags look to return to national prominence this season and begin the campaign as the fourth team ranked out of the loaded WCAC led by three-star Villanova commit Malcolm Thomas.

Although the Panthers lost the majority of their production last season due to graduation, top 25 senior Billy Richmond will look to keep the Garden State powerhouse formidable again this season.

Following a runner-up finish in the Class 6A state tournament last season, the Timberwolves return a respectable core despite losing each of their top two scorers to graduation.

50. Sunnyslope (Phoenix, Ariz.)

Following a run to the Open Division title game last season, the Vikings return their top five scorers from last season including promising sophomores John Mattingly and Rider Portela and Ball State pledge Jai Anthoni Bearden.

Three-time defending Division 2 state champions bring back four of their top five scorers from last season including three-star Nebraska signee Nick Janowski.

Following a run to the Class 6A state title game last season, the Cavemen bring back key contributors Blake Rawson and Tiger Cuff to power the charge.

All five starters return from a group that reached the Class 5A state title game last season including No. 12-ranked sophomore Cameron Holmes.

High school basketball's active winningest coach Gary McKnight enters the season with a career record of 1,243-134. He returns four of fives starters from last year's Southern Section Division 1 champions.

Despite suffering heavy turnover due to graduation, three-star Northwestern commit K.J. Windham returns to help this group compete for back-to-back Class 4A state titles.

Defending Class AAAAAAA state champions return two starters from last season in Arkansas State signee Josh Hill and Kennesaw State pledge Ricky McKenzie. The Wildcats begin the season ranked No. 4 in the Peach State.

Bring back the bulk of their core from last season led by three-star junior guard Cameron Carroll. The Warriors are among the top contenders for the Class 6A state crown.

Three-time defending Class 4A state champions are expected be a force again in the Show-Me State this season with three-star junior forward Nicholas Randall leading the charge.

90. Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore, Md.)
2022-23: 38-4, No. 20 in final rankings
Two-time defending Baltimore Catholic League champions look to win three consecutive league titles for the first time since their run at the top from 2012 through 2014 powered by Rhode Island commit Tyonne Farrell.

91. St. Francis Prep (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.)
2022-23: 19-9, Unranked
Bring back four starters from a team that notched some big victories last season. Junior guard Vere Anthony and sophomore forward Oesoemana Sacko are the top returners for the Terriors.



92. Richwoods (Peoria, Ill.)
2022-23: 25-6, Unranked
Return three starters and add the key addition of Rutgers commit Lathan Sommerville from a team that lost to eventual state champion Metamora in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament last season.

2022-23: 30-3, No. 51 in final rankings
Defending Division II-AA state champions return a pair of starters as three-star Vanderbilt signee Tyler Tanner and highly-regarded football prospect George MacIntyre lead the way.

Two-time defending Class AA state champions are a team to watch with top 80 junior Treyvon Maddox serving as the catalyst.

The Vikings enter the season as favorites to capture the Class 5A state crown as they graduate just one senior from last season and add top 65 Missouri signee Marcus Allen into the fold.

Top 70 senior Travis Perry became Kentucky's all-time leading scorer last season with 4,359 points headed into his final season of high school hoops. The Lyons return their top six scorers from a run to the KHSAA Sweet 16 quarterfinals.

Defending Division I state champions return a pair of starters from last season as Kent State commit Jonas Nichols and highly-regarded football prospect Sam Greer are expected to be the catalysts for the Knights.



2022-23: 29-4, Unranked
Following a historic season that saw them reach the Class 6A state semifinals for the first time in program history, junior guard Jacob Nguyen and senior guard E.J. Campbell look to guide this group a step further.

2022-23: 33-3, No. 88 in final rankings
Following a trip to the Division II-AA state title game last season, the Saints bring back three starters as senior guard Whit Almtyer, Belmont pledge Cooper Haynes and sophomore post Fred Smith return to power the production.

2022-23: 27-5, No. 67 in final rankings
Defending Class AAAAAA state champions are favorites to repeat this season behind Kennesaw State commit Braedan Lue.
