The
Carmel (Ind.) Greyhounds hold the winter lead in the MaxPreps Cup as announced last week, but they also hold the largest margin over the second place team in any of the 50 state rankings.
Carmel, which has 1,831 points according to the MaxPreps Cup formula, ranks 1,218 points ahead of second-place
Zionsville with 613 points.
Meanwhile in South Dakota,
Stevens (Rapid City) is seven points behind the state's top-ranked school,
Tea, 625 to 618. That's the closest margin between two schools for the top spot in a specific state.
Video: MaxPreps Cup post-winter standingsIndiana school rides three winter state titles to the top spot. See the list below for the top five schools in all 50 states.
The MaxPreps Cup is a system used by MaxPreps to determine the No. 1 high school sports program in the nation. Schools accumulate points for finishing first or second in the state finals/championship or finishing in the Top 25 national rankings for a particular sport.
Points are also awarded based on the size of the state, the popularity of the sport, the playoff classification for the sport played and for the number of teams competing in that playoff classification.
