Last week in high school baseball had it all – the end of the nation's longest winning streak, a climb to No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 for the winningest coach in Texas history and a preseason favorite that kept its national championship very much alive.
Previous No. 1
Tomball saw its 38-game win streak and 40-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to
Marcus (Flower Mound) in the Texas Class 6A Division 2 semifinals, dropping to No. 4. The good news for the Cougars is that they were able to take two in a row from Marcus on Saturday to advance to the championship game against
Memorial (Houston) on Saturday.
Taking Tomball's spot is another Texas team led by the winningest coach in state history.
Calallen (Corpus Christi) coach Steve Chapman, with a career record of 1,254-273-5, returns to the state final for the second straight year. Chapman and the Wildcats will appear in their 10th championship game with three titles to their credit.

Calallen faces
Pleasant Grove (Texarkana), which lost to the Wildcats in the state final last year. The Hawks swept
West Plains (Amarillo) in two games and moved from No. 20 to No. 14 this week.
In California, St. John Bosco (Bellflower) won its second straight Southern Section Division 1 championship by beating Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) in the semifinals and Norco in the championship game. The preseason No. 1 team in the nation by MaxPreps, Bosco improves to No. 3 this week but sits behind Trinity (Louisville, Ky.), which defeated the Braves at the National High School Invitational.
St. John Bosco will compete in the Southern California Regional playoffs this week but will not have to face Orange Lutheran (Orange), Harvard-Westlake or Norco, all of which either didn't qualify or chose not to participate.
Two new teams joined the rankings this week. Lovejoy (Lucas), which is competing for the Class 5A Division 2 championship in Texas against Sharyland (Mission), comes in at No. 24. Loganville upended Pope (Marietta) to snap a 26-game win streak, capture the Georgia AAAAA state championship and earn the No. 25 spot in this week's rankings.
Game of the Week
Loganville 4, Pope 3. In the rubber game of the Class AAAAA championship game, Loganville scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win the state title. Brantley Carter had the game-winning hit with a two-run, walkoff single.
Game to Watch
No. 1 Calallen vs. No. 14 Pleasant Grove, Friday. These two teams battled for the Class 4A Division 1 championship last year with Calallen winning 5-3. Coach Steve Chapman will have his choice of either
Drayton Mitchell or
Collier Carroll on the mound. Both have double-digit win totals this year. Pleasant Grove can counter with
Hunter Rose, a 10-win pitcher with two no-hitters this year.
Pitcher of the Week Julian Garcia of St. John Bosco threw a seven-inning, one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and no walks to beat Norco and give the Braves their second straight Southern Section Division 1 championship.
Hitter of the Week
One of the top pitchers in the country, Hunter Rose of Pleasant Grove can hit, too. He went 5-for-5 with a double and two triples in the two wins over West Plains. He drove in five runs, including four in one game.
Streaks
With Tomball's streak ending at 38 straight games, the new leader is
Lakewood (Ohio) with 27 wins in a row. Calallen and
Germantown (Wis.) are right behind with 26 straight wins.
