If the Las Vegas Raiders select
Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick later tonight, the Indiana quarterback will become the second player from Florida taken first overall joining Tucker Frederickson, who was the No. 1 pick in the 1965 by the New York Giants.
Texas owns the top spot when it comes to producing No. 1 selections with 15. After a 27-year drought from 1982 until 2009, they have had six players selected with top pick over the last 16 years and that includes last year's No. 1 selection in
Cam Ward.
California has had 13 players selected first overall. Ron Yary (1968), O.J. Simpson (1969), Jim Plunkett (1971), John Elway (1983), Keyshawn Johnson (1996), Carson Palmer (2003),
Jared Goff (2016) and
Bryce Young (2023) headline the list from the Golden State.
Ohio (6), Alabama (5) and Louisiana (5) were the only other states that have produced at least five No. 1 selections.
In total, 27 different states along with the District of Columbia have had at least one player hear their name called first overall since the NFL draft started in 1936.
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming are still waiting for their first overall selection.
Peyton Manning (1998) and Eli Manning (2004) are the only set of brothers to be taken No. 1 overall and both graduated from Newman. Peyton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 and Eli is still waiting to hear his name called after becoming eligible in 2025.
