It shouldn't be a surprise that the player and coach who were red hot all season long — in fact that very description can be found in their names — are the MaxPreps National Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.
Gio Rojas of
Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) and Andy Rojo of
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) earned the honor this year after leading their teams to championships. The two share similar surnames which translate to "red" in Spanish.
Rojas led the Eagles to the Class 7A state championship — the fifth straight state for the Florida powerhouse — while posting a 13-0 record with 120 strikeouts in just 68 innings. He was particularly effective in the postseason, giving up just two earned runs in 25.1 innings pitched. He went 4-0 in those four outings with 48 strikeouts, including 16 in his final appearance against Alonso (Tampa). Stoneman Douglas finished No. 2 in the MaxPreps Top 25 with a 31-2 record.
Rojo, meanwhile, guided St. John Bosco (30-4) to the championship in the highly-competitive Trinity League as well as the Southern Section Division 1 and the Southern California Division 1 titles.
The Braves, who finished ranked No. 3 nationally, became the first team to pull off the section-regional double since the Southern California championships were established by the CIF in 2021. The section championship is the first in school history after Bosco reached the Division 2 championship game last year.
Rojas and Rojo headline the 2025 MaxPreps All-America Team, which consists of 30 players on a first and second team. Players are selected based more on in-season performance, including statistics, team success and local honors, rather than potential at the next level.
