In risk management, there is the concept of "known unknowns." This is
the case where there are risks that are known to exist, but they can't
be accurately quantified to judge the potential impact. The high school
basketball record book is full of known unknowns.
When it comes
to high school records of any kind, it always comes down to what has
been reported. A record can't be documented in a record book unless
someone reports it, hopefully a coach with adequate documentation. To
that end, the reported high school record book is filled with incredible
performances by the likes of Greg Procell, Demond "Tweety" Carter, Jackie Moreland and Harold Ray Strother.
All of
those players mentioned above are part of the "knowns." Their scoring
exploits are well documented. However they are also part of the "known
unknowns."
MaxPreps has compiled a list of the top 10 record
holders in a number of statistical categories. All of the players in the
lists have been documented in a record book somewhere or they have had
their stats reported to a newspaper or to the MaxPreps leaderboards.
But
while their scoring numbers have been reported, many of their other
stats are a mystery, an unknown, because they were never reported or
only partially reported. Here's a look at some of the more prominent
"known unknowns."
Rebounds in a seasonKnown: Bruce Williams of
Florien (La.) is listed No. 1 with 1,139 rebounds in 1979-80.
Known unknown: Jackie Moreland of
Minden (La.) reportedly averaged 26
rebounds per game in 1955-56. His team played 65 games (small schools in
Louisiana didn't play football and began basketball season in early
October). That would equate to about 1,690 rebounds in a season, but the
exact total is unknown.
Field goals in a seasonKnown: Bruce
Williams of Florien (his name is prominent in these lists) had 2,296
field goals in his four-year career and 777 in his senior year of
1979-80.
Known unknown: Greg Procell of
Ebarb (Noble, La.) scored 6,702 points in
his career and 3,173 points his senior year of 1969-70. Procell did not
play with a 3-point line and as a guard he was more likely to shoot
around the key instead of inside the key. He played 180 career games
and averaged 37.2 points per game. If we assume he made
about seven free throws per game, that would mean 15 field goals on
average. That would be 2,700 career field goals. He averaged 46.6 points
his senior year in 68 games. Again, assume about nine free throws and you get about
19 field goals per game for an estimated season total of 1,292 field
goals – nearly 500 more than Williams' reported record. But again, Procell's
exact totals are unknown.
Free throws in a season
Known: Tristen Newton of
Burges (El Paso, Texas) sank 425 free throws in 2018-19.
Known unknown: Harold Ray Strother of
Plainview (Glenmora, La.) scored 2,690 points in 1958-59 for an average of 38.6 points per game in 71 games. A 6-foot-4 center/forward, Strother played under the basket and likely went to the free throw line on a frequent basis. Assuming he made between nine and 10 free throws per game, it's possible he made about 700 free throws in the season. It's also possible he had more rebounds than Moreland's known unknown since Strother was reportedly a prolific rebounder. But like his free throw totals, no rebounding figures were ever reported.
Career 3-point field goals
Known: Julian Newman of
Downey Christian (Orlando, Fla.) and
Prodigy Prep (Orlando, Fla.) made 1,178 three-pointers in his career which is nearly 400 more than the No. 2 player on the list, Joe Girard III of
Glens Falls (N.Y.), who had 688. Newman, it should be mentioned, played eight years of varsity basketball, starting as a fifth grader at Downey Christian. MaxPreps is including all stats for varsity seasons, including those played prior to the ninth grade.
Known unknown: Demond "Tweety" Carter of Reserve Christian (Reserve, La.) was even more prolific a 3-point shooter than Newman. In fact Carter has the reported national 3-point field goals record for a season with 287 – 54 more than the No. 2 player on the list. Carter scored 7,494 points in his six varsity seasons which spanned 277 games. Give him about five 3-pointers a game for his career and that would be 1,385 threes. However, his exact totals are unknown.
Career free throws
Known: Julian Newman has 1,404 free throws in eight seasons.
Known unknown: Again, Tweety Carter could possibly knock Newman from the top. Give him an average of six free throws a game and he would have 1,662. Once again, his career totals are unknown.
These are just a sampling of the known unknowns. We also have incomplete stats for Procell and Carter when it comes to assists and steals. We don't have career rebound and scoring totals for the likes of Karl Malone and Al Jefferson. We also don't know Lew Alcindor's career and single season blocked shot totals. Perhaps none of their totals would be national records, but they would likely be somewhere on the lists below. And that's the context within which the lists need to be viewed.
Following are the MaxPreps lists of the top 10s in just about every statistical category. They include career, season and game totals for points, field goals, free throws, assists, steals, rebounds, 3-point field goals, free throws and blocked shots.
Sources for the lists include the MaxPreps leaderboards, the National Federation of High School record book, research done by Doug Huff and Ronnie Flores, Bob Springer's Texas high school basketball record book, the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book by Nelson Tennis and Mark Tennis, Minnesota High School Basketball Records website, various state association record books and research via newspapers.com.
