Nevada High School Basketball - Shadow Ridge thwarts Cimarron-Memorial
January 29, 2024: Las Vegas, NV 89128 The Shadow Ridge Mustangs (Las Vegas, NV) basketball knocked off the host Cimarron-Memorial Spartans (Las Vegas, NV), 48-32 in Monday's league test.
The Mustangs (15-3) will now prepare for their test against Legacy (North Las Vegas, NV). The Longhorns go into the non-league test with a 11-2 record.
The Spartans now own a 5-12 record. They play next when they travel to Del Sol for a test on Thursday, February 1.
First Quarter
The Spartans in the 1st Quarter missed many shots, but they were able to hold the 1st place Shadow Team to 9 points & took a 11 to 9 Lead into the 2nd Quarter. The Spartans hit 3 - 3Pt Shots in the Quarter including a catch & shoot by Forward Byron Cooper which sparked the Cimarron early.
Second Quarter
The Spartans once again struggled to hit open shots, & their rebounding, plus allowing multiple run outs for easy baskets by Shadow Ridge was the difference in the half & they trailed 22-16.
Third Quarter
The Spartans came out of half time & they had so many missed opportunities, as they missed layups, missed open 3's & missed 3 out of 4 Free Throws. One huge area that the Spartans failed to capitalize on was with all of their missed shots, the other 4 players that were not shooting did not position themselves to get offensive rebounds, which was the difference in the game.
Fourth Quarter
in the 4th Quarter the Spartans forced many turnovers, but failed to score enough to cut the already increasing lead by Shadow.
After the Game Coach Shkorupa had this to say,"When you play against one of the best team's in the state you have to be fundamentally sound. Unfortunately we had our best rebounders fail to box out, & one of our best ball handlers had many turnovers. Ironically, we forced Shadow into 37 Total Turnovers from our ball pressure & we had 17 steals, but if you don't capitalize on those opportunities by attacking the basket & you keep shoot outside shots you will never win. Plus, we have up 10 Run Out Layups for 20 Points, which we all uncontested, which as a Team was the difference in the game".
