High school football: Pulaski Academy dominates list of single-season offensive yardage leaders

By Kevin Askeland Aug 22, 2023, 10:00am

Longview (Texas) holds record with 9,162 total yards, but Bruins appear 10 times on top 100 list.

Kevin Kelley made a lasting impression during his 18 years at Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.). Between 2003 and 2020, Kelley went 216-29-1 with eight state championships. He also had one of the most prolific offenses in high school history, accounting for 10 spots on the MaxPreps Top 100 list for the single-season yardage leaders.

Pulaski's highest total yardage total came in 2019, when the Bruins compiled 9,065 yards of rushing and passing yardage combined. All totaled, the Bruins went over 8,000 yards three times and added seven more seasons over 7,400 yards.

Centennial (Corona, Calif.), makes the list four times, including No. 3 with 9,047 yards during the 2013 season. Gilmer (Texas)Folsom (Calif.)Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)Dudley (Greensboro, N.C.) and Stephenville (Texas) all make the list three times.

Longview (Texas) claimed the record in 2018 from Corona Centennial when it went 16-0 and won a state championship. The Lobos are the only school in high school history to have over 4,000 yards passing and 5,000 yards rushing in a season season.

Pine Bluff (Ark.) set the national record for total yardage in 1925 when it went 16-0 and racked up 8,588 yards, including a national record 8,081 yards on the ground.

Stephenville passed that mark in 1998 on the arm of Kelan Luker, who threw for 4,697 yards and led the team to a state championship.

The record fell again in 2013 when Centennial became the second team in high school football history to rush for over 4,000 yards and pass for over 4,000 yards in a season for a total of 9,047 yards. The first team to accomplish the 4,000-4,000 feat was none other than Centennial, which had 8,570 total yards in 2012.

The MaxPreps Top 100 list for single-season yardage includes the team, the year the total was set and the total number of yards. The team record is included along with the total yards rushing and total yards passing. Individual rushing and passing leaders are also listed when available.

Among the individuals on the list include current NFL quarterbacks Kyler Murray (Allen, 2014), Joe Burrow (Athens, 2016), and Brock Purdy (Perry, 2017). A couple of nephews of famous uncles also make the list in St. Stanislaus quarterback Dylan Favre (uncle: Brett Favre) and Joliet Catholic's John Ruettiger (uncle: "Rudy" Ruettiger).
