For the first time in over 35 years, there could be a new No. 1 when it comes to high school football's winningest programs nationally. With 927 wins,
Male (Louisville, Ky.) could overtake
Valdosta (Ga.) with 936 wins as the all-time winningest team.
Male has quickly closed ranks on Valdosta over the past 10 years with 110 victories during that span. Valdosta, meanwhile, has won just 71 games during the past decade, including an 0-12 season in which it had to forfeit over half of its wins for the season.
Valdosta will have the same coach, Shelton Felton, for the second year in a row after having three different coaches over three seasons. Male, meanwhile, has had Chris Wolfe as the head coach the past 10 seasons and he has re-established a winning tradition the Bulldogs maintained under the guidance of Bob Redman in the 1990s.
Male is not new to being No. 1. During the 1960s, Male took the all-time national lead away from
Haverhill (Mass.) in 1965 and held on to the No. 1 spot until 1970 when
Washington (Massillon, Ohio) took over the top spot. Valdosta took the lead away from Washington in 1987 and has stayed on top ever since.
However, Valdosta is coming off a 4-6 season and Male went 13-1 last year with the only loss coming to
St. Xavier (Louisville) in the state championship game. It's quite possible that Male could surpass Valdosta sometime during the playoffs.
Another team to keep an eye on is aforementioned Washington. After completely dominating high school football during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when it won nine mythical national titles, the Tigers have been somewhat dormant over the past 50 years with no state championships on their resume. However, under eighth-year coach Nate Moore, the Tigers have regained their status among the elite teams in Ohio. Moore has a 71-21 record in seven seasons as head coach and the Tigers have 920 all-time wins, placing them 16 behind Valdosta. Washington won't pass Valdosta this year, but it could be a contender over the next few seasons.
MaxPreps has compiled the list of winningest high school football teams using a variety of sources. Among those sources include the work of Loren Maxwell with Georgia High School Football Historians, Kev Varney and Tom Sikorski in Illinois, Pennsylvania Football News by Tom Elling and Rich Vetock, Texas High School Football History by Joe Lee Smith (currently edited by Jerry Forrest), Thomas "Mike" Goddard from Missouri, Kevin Patrowsky from Wisconsin, Kansas High School Football History, Rick Baker of Four Seasons Football, Mark Tennis of Cal-Hi Sports, and various state high school association record books.
The biggest contributor to the list is the website Football Friday Night, which continues the work of Robert Fawcett. Starting around the year 2000, Fawcett attempted to find the winningest teams in the nation. He stopped working on the project in 2009, but Football Friday Night has taken over maintaining the records since.
Not all historians agree on total wins due to information available, so whenever possible we go with the most local historian. See the complete list below.

Male celebrates its 2018 state title, one of eight the program has won since 1960.
