After nearly winning a national championship in 2024,
Corona (Calif.) begins the 2025 season at No. 1 in the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings.
Winners of the prestigious National High School Invitational and the Southern Section Division 1 title last year, Corona features three potential first-round MLB Draft picks in
Seth Hernandez,
Brady Ebel and
Billy Carlson. No school has produced three top 10 picks in the same draft but that scenario isn't out of the question.
Should the Panthers finish where they are starting, it will be hard-earned. Corona will attempt to repeat at the National High School Invitational in addition to participating in the Perfect Game Southern California Showdown and the Boras
Classic. There are also four potential playoff opponents featured in our Preseason MaxPreps Top 25.
Read on for in-depth previews of the nation's top 100 teams heading into the 2025 season.
1. Corona (Calif.) Coach: Andy Wise
Last year: 30-3, Southern Section Division 1 champion
Top players:
Seth Hernandez (P/OF),
Brady Ebel (3B/P),
Billy Carlson (SS),
Ethin Bingaman (P),
Anthony Murphy (OF, Jr),
Trey Ebel (2B, Soph).
Breakdown: With Carlson, and the two Ebel brothers, Corona has the best infield in the nation. When Hernandez is in the outfield with Anthony Murphy (one of the top player in the Class of 2026 according to Perfect Game), the Panthers have one of the nation's top outfields. Add Bingamin, a transfer from Arrowhead Christian, to the pitching staff that already includes Hernandez, considered the top pitcher in the Class of 2025, along with Carlson and Brady Ebel and you have a team very capable of going wire-to-wire at No.1.
2. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Coach: Tim Held
Last year: 29-3
Top players: Zion Theophilus (RHP),
Carter Christeson (INF),
Matt Ponatoski (IF/P, Jr.),
Conner Cuozzo (IF, Jr.),
Charlie Valencic (IF),
Jovan Love (OF),
Luke Pappano (LHP, OF),
Connor Fuhrer (RHP)
Breakdown: If not for an upset loss to Mason in the Division I playoffs, Archbishop Moeller would have challenged for the national championship last year. The bulk of that team returns, including Theophilus and Ponatoski, who was the MaxPreps Ohio Football Player of the Year in the fall. Cuozzo, the Greater Catholic League POY, also returns along with five other all-league players.
3. Huntington Beach (Calif.)
Coach: Benji Madure
Last year: 24-10
Top players:
Trent Grindlinger (C),
Ethan Porter (3B/RHP),
Tyler Bellerose (RHP),
Jared Grindlinger (LHP/OF, So.),
Cole Clark (2B),
C.J. Weinstein (SS),
Trevor Goldenetz (CF),
Jayton Greer (C/1B)
Breakdown: Boasting a deep lineup with experience and strong pitching, the Oilers have their eye on winning the Southern Section Division 1 championship and possibly more. They compete in the National High School Invitational, which they have won twice including two years ago. They will also be at the Boras Classic. The Oilers fell just short of the final in the Southern Section Division 1 tournament and the Southern California Division 1 tournament, losing in the semifinals of both. The Grindlinger brothers lead the way for the Oilers. Trent, a senior, is the top-rated catcher in California by Perfect Game while Jared, a sophomore first baseman, is the No. 1 player in the state.
4. Tomball (Texas)

Tomball also has the perfect player to replace All-American catcher Cade Arrambide – a junior backstop appropriately named Catcher Hopkins.
5. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)

Max Hemenway (C,
So.),
Parker Allman (LHP/OF, Jr.)
Breakdown: After going undefeated and winning the national championship in 2023, the Ascenders stumbled a bit at the end of last season. IMG Academy should be back in contention this year with two of the nation's top players in Gamble and Dean Moss, who are both ranked among the top 10 players in the class by Perfect Game. The two outfielders, combined with Campbell, give IMG the best outfield in the nation. IMG also picked up one of the nation's top sophomore catchers in Max Hemenway, who transferred from Puyallup.

Breakdown: The Bears captured the MaxPreps national championship in 2024 behind an impressive playoff performance that saw them post four straight shutouts to finish the season. William Schmidt earned MaxPreps state POY honors for his performance and his graduation puts a big hole in the starting lineup for the Bears.
