Valdosta (Ga.) and
Washington (Massillon, Ohio) – two high school football programs with a combined 1,876 wins – face each other in the season opener for both teams on
Aug. 18 as part of the Northeast Ohio vs. America Showcase at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
Valdosta and Washington are two of the top four winningest programs in the sport's history (see the complete list below). Valdosta has 944 all-time wins according to research by the Georgia High School Football Historian Association (GHSFA). Washington has 932 according to the Ohio High School
Athletic Association.
Either Valdosta or Washington has held the title
of "all-time wins leader" since approximately October of 1972.
Washington took over the lead from
Male (Louisville, Ky.) that year and
held on to the all-time lead until 1987 when Valdosta overtook the
Tigers for the lead. The Wildcats have held it ever
since but the gap is narrowing.
With a 10-5 record last year,
Male crept two wins closer to overtaking Valdosta. The Bulldogs now have
937 wins and could possibly surpass Valdosta this season.
Male is not the only Kentucky school to keep an eye on.
Mayfield went
15-1 last year and passed Washington for the No. 3 spot on the list
with 933 all-time wins. Under the guidance of Jack Morris and his son Joe Morris for 49 of the past 55 seasons, Mayfield has gone 541-105-2 under their tenure. Joe Morris, who is 287-55 since he started at Mayfield in 1999, was recently elected to the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
MaxPreps has compiled the list of winningest high school football programs
using a variety of sources. Among those sources include the work of
Loren Maxwell with Georgia High School Football Historians, Kev Varney
and Tom Sikorski in Illinois, Pennsylvania Football News by Tom Elling
and Rich Vetock, Texas High School Football History by Joe Lee Smith
(currently edited by Jerry Forrest), Thomas "Mike" Goddard from
Missouri, Kevin Patrowsky from Wisconsin, Kansas High School Football
History, Rick Baker of Four Seasons Football, Mark Tennis of Cal-Hi
Sports, David McKnight and various state high school association record books.
The
biggest contributor to the list is the website Football Friday Night,
which continues the work of Robert Fawcett. Starting around the year
2000, Fawcett attempted to find the winningest programs in the nation. He
stopped working on the project in 2009 but Football Friday Night has
taken over maintaining the records since.
The all-time wins list has a few changes this year. In California, we are recognizing the totals compiled by Cal-Hi Sports for
Bakersfield and Long Beach Poly. Mark Tennis, along with his uncle
Nelson and their colleagues Bob Barnett and the late Bruce McIntosh
would have the most accurate numbers for those schools.
Also, the GHSFA has expanded its research to include South Carolina and our list includes several of those schools as well as record adjustments for schools that were previously part of the list. We have also included new programs from Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee due to the emergence of data that was not previously available.
Several schools from previous years were eliminated after it was determined that they consolidations of two or more schools. These included
Appalachia (Va.),
Port Arthur Memorial (Port Arthur, Texas),
Salem (Va.) and
Washington-Wilkes (Washington, Ga.).
