Malcolm Moore of McClatchy has put his name at the top of a number of lists this year. He's ranked by Perfect Game as the top catcher in the country. Perfect Game also ranks Moore as the top recruit in California. Now MaxPreps lists Moore as the Player of the Year on its California All-State baseball team.
Moore will likely be the top catcher chose and the top Californian chosen when Major League Baseball holds its draft on Sunday. Moore improved his power hitting ability this year to finish among the state leaders with 13 dingers. He also batted .500 and led McClatchy to the section finals, where it ultimately lost to Whitney. However the runner-up finish marks the best season for the Lions since 1998 when they won their lone section championship.
Moore heads a MaxPreps All-State team that includes two teams of 30 players each. The players are selected base on all-area and all-league honors, season stats and recruiting rankings.
Matt Tomlin of
St. Bernard's (Eureka) is the MaxPreps California Coach of the Year. Already a two-time state champion as the Crusaders' football coach, Tomlin added a NorCal baseball championship to the trophy case in 2022. Although the school has 180 students, according to the North Coast Section website, it faced off against much larger schools in the NorCal Division III tournament.
Taking on Central (Fresno) in the semifinals, Tomlin's team faced a school with over 4,000 students. The Crusaders won on an 8-0 shutout by all-state pitcher Nick Dugan and advanced to the finals where they beat Alpha Charter (Elverta), 7-6. How impressive is the win over Central? Using six degrees of separation, consider that Central defeated Buchanan (Clovis), which had a win over De La Salle (Concord), which won the NorCal Division 1 championship.
Tomlin has a record of 86-39 in his five seasons as head coach of the Crusaders.
