September 21, 2023: Wilson, NC 27893 The crowd at Thursday's league bout between the West Johnston Wildcats (Benson, NC) and the host Fike Demons (Wilson, NC), saw West Johnston's volleyball squad beat Fike by a tally of 3-1.
With the win, West Johnston upgrades its record to 9-4 on the year. The Wildcats host Southern Wayne (Dudley, NC) to play the Saints in a Quad County 3A bout on Tuesday, September 26. The Saints go into the bout with a record of 7-7.
The Demons now own a 3-9 record. They play next when they host South Johnston for a Quad County 3A bout on Tuesday, September 26. Fike will play a Trojans squad coming off a 3-0 league win over Smithfield-Selma (Smithfield, NC). The Trojans record now stands at 11-3.
Match Summary
The West Johnston girls volleyball team knew that it would be in for a real battle tonight as it faced a Fike High School team that had stretched West to 5 sets on the Wildcats' home court earlier this season. Fike came out on fire, taking the 1st set 14 - 25, featuring two hitters who were playing lights out. However, the Lady Wildcats settled in and took control of the 2nd set with the scored tied at 19 by finished the set on a 6 - 1 run. The West girls took quick control of the 3rd set, going on an 11 - 2 run to stretch its lead to 15 - 5 and then then finishing comfortably ahead by a 26 - 14 score. The Fike girls were amazingly scrappy but could not find any holes in the West defense, in one of the Wildcats' most consistent efforts this season. With the 4th set tied at 13 - 13, West finished out the exciting match with a 12 - 3 run, with every West player finding ways to contribute to the team victory. Next up for West is Southern Wayne on Tuesday at home.
