North Carolina High School Volleyball - West Johnston tips Fike
October 16, 2023: Benson, NC 27504 West Johnston Wildcats (Benson, NC) supporters left the game in high spirits Monday as they observed their volleyball squad hold off the visiting Fike Demons (Wilson, NC), 3-2 in a non-league match.
Next up, the Wildcats clash with the South Johnston Trojans (Four Oaks, NC) in a Quad County 3A match, on Tuesday, October 17. West Johnston will attempt to advance on its 14-6 season record. The Trojans come into the match with a 17-5 record after their 3-0 non-league win over Smithfield-Selma (Smithfield, NC).
With the loss, Fike drops to 6-14 on the campaign.
Match Summary
West Johnston started this night in good fashion with 2 wins in sets that were very close. Fike had played West to 5 sets on West's home court back in late August, so it's no surprise that the Fike girls would give the Lady Wildcats a fierce struggle, and that they did. After taking sets 3 & 4, the Fike players found themselves in yet another match with the Wildcats that would come down to a decisive 5th set. Things were looking pretty favorable for Fike, with the Wildcats spotting the Demons to a 3 - 9 lead. Even after losing the previous two matches in 5 set heartbreakers, the West girls refused to give in and mustered the energy to stage an amazing comeback, clawing and fighting their way to the 20 - 18 set victory. Next up is South Johnston in the semi-finals on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM.
