Heading into his senior year,
Lathrop (Fairbanks, Alaska) senior
Ryan Thomas decided to try something new. He decided to play football. The rest is Alaska placekicking history.
A longtime soccer player who had played on traveling teams in his home state, Thomas had never played football prior to this year. He's become an instant sensation, leading the nation in extra points, hitting on 54 of 54 tries. His 54 extra points for a season is a new
Alaska state record as are his consecutive kicks. He also had 10 extra points in one game to set another state record.
"My friends who play football have asked me to play for a few years now,
and my coach had asked me last season as well," said Thomas. "I had never really
watched or played football and my passion was in soccer. I decided since
it was my last year at Lathrop High School
and I would play. It’s been a fun and a
surprising experience! It’s been so exciting to be ranked
No. 1 on MaxPreps."
MaxPreps has compiled a list of over 150 kickers who have booted at least 70 or more consecutive extra points. With a few more games and the playoffs ahead, Thomas has a chance to join the list.
Kim Braswell of Avondale Estates (Ga.) held the consecutive extra points record for over 40 years with a total of 134. A total of 11 kickers have since passed that mark over the past 10 years, led by Nathanial Vakos of Avon (Ohio), who missed his first extra point as a freshman and then made 260 in a row.
MaxPreps compiled the list using the National Federation of High Schools record book along with state association record books and the MaxPreps leaderboards.
