At some point during the 2024 high school football season, there could be a new
all-time wins leader for the first time in 37 years. Just exactly which
team it will be remains to be seen.
MaxPreps annually provides a
list of the nation's all-time winningest high school football programs.
This year the list includes 250 schools with all-time records compiled
from a variety of sources.
Valdosta (Ga.) is the all-time
leader with 952 wins and the Wildcats have held on to that lead since
overtaking
Washington (Massillon, Ohio) for the top spot in 1987.
However
three programs have been creeping toward overtaking the
Wildcats at No. 1. Two teams, Massillon Washington and
Male (Louisville, Ky.), have
previously held the all-time lead and are tied with 948 wins.
Mayfield (Ky.) has never held the top spot but has made a rapid rise over the
past 60 years under the father-son coaching combination of Jack and
Joe Morris to post 946 wins.
All three of the challenging schools
posted better records than Valdosta last year, which went 8-4.
Massillon Washington, winner of 24 state championships via state rankings prior to
the implementation of the state playoff system, won its first state playoff championship and finished 16-0 while Mayfield finished 13-1
and Male went 11-2.
All four schools participate in playoff systems that
allow for a maximum of 16 games, so it's possible that one of the three
challengers could overtake the Wildcats. MaxPreps will be monitoring the
progress of the four teams throughout the season.
One note
regarding the top 250 list below is that various sources often have different
all-time totals. Football Friday Night, a source MaxPreps has used to
compile this list, may have different totals than the National
Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) record book, which might have different totals
than independent researchers like Four Seasons Football and Georgia
High School Football Historians. MaxPreps has attempted to corroborate
totals to the best of our ability. In most cases, we go with the most
local source. When no local sources were available, we deferred to
Football Friday Night. In some cases, we changed sources due to new
corroboration.
MaxPreps has compiled the list
of winningest high school football programs using a variety of sources.
Among those sources include the work of Loren Maxwell with Georgia High
School Football Historians, Kev Varney and Tom Sikorski in Illinois,
Pennsylvania Football News by Tom Elling and Rich Vetock, Texas High
School Football History by Joe Lee Smith (currently edited by Jerry
Forrest), Thomas "Mike" Goddard from Missouri, Kevin Patrowsky from
Wisconsin, Kansas High School Football History, Rick Baker of Four
Seasons Football, Mark Tennis of Cal-Hi Sports, David McKnight, various
state high school association record books and school websites.
The biggest
contributor to the list is the website Football Friday Night, which
continues the work of Robert Fawcett. Starting around the year 2000,
Fawcett attempted to find the winningest programs in the nation. He
stopped working on the project in 2009 but Football Friday Night has
taken over maintaining the records since.
Schools may appear on
the Football Friday Night list but are not included on the top 250. That
could be because the school in question has consolidated with other
schools over the years. MaxPreps tries to only include schools that have
not consolidated. Schools that lost students due to
the opening of a new school and then changed names are included (i.e.
Medford became North Medford). Teams that are tied for number of wins
are ranked in order by winning percentage.
