Virginia High School Volleyball - New Kent edged by Smithfield
October 24, 2023: Smithfield, VA 23430 The Smithfield Packers volleyball team scored 3 points and limited the visiting New Kent Trojans to 2 in the Packers league victory on Tuesday.
The Packers now have a 9-10 record. They put it on the line next when they travel to Tabb for a Bay Rivers game on Thursday, October 26. Smithfield will meet a Tigers team coming off a 3-2 league win over Warhill (Williamsburg, VA). The Tigers record now stands at 10-12.
The Trojans (11-11) will now prepare for their game against Bruton (Williamsburg, VA). The Panthers enter the Bay Rivers game with a 14-5 record. In their last game, Bruton held off Poquoson (Poquoson, VA), 3-0, in a league game.
Match Summary
The Lady Trojans came out on the short end of a 5-set match with the Packers of Smithfield on Smithfield's senior night. Smithfield started hot with a lot of energy from their senior night presentations which included flowers for the five NK seniors in attendance. NK battled back in the second set to win 25-23, then took a commanding lead in the third set to win 25-16 and go up 2-1 for the match. But Smithfield didn't "pack it in" and responded with a 25-19 win to even the match. Starting with the serve in the deciding set, the Packers went up 0-1 before relinquishing the serve on an attack error. NK pulled ahead on two service aces for their only lead of the set. Smithfield pulled out to 6-3 lead and the best the Lady Trojans managed for the rest of the set was to pull within one point at 5-6 with Smithfield taking the match 11-15 on spike winner. NK will finish their regular season at home against Bruton on Thursday, Oct 26, which will start with their senior night recognition.
