The Trojans (6-7) will now prepare for their challenge against Bruton (Williamsburg, VA). The Panthers enter the Bay Rivers challenge with a 7-3 record. In their last challenge, Bruton defeated Poquoson (Poquoson, VA), 3-1, in a league challenge.
Next, the Packers meet the Tabb Tigers (Yorktown, VA) in a Bay Rivers challenge, on Tuesday, September 26. Smithfield will attempt to move on its 2-6 season record.
Match Summary
The Lady Trojans defeated a much improved Smithfield Packers team in four sets. The Packers' offense was based on their strong middle attack, while New Kent got 18 attack points from their left-side hitters, 15 from their middles, and eight from the right. In a see-saw contest, New Kent took the first set 25-20, dominated the second 25-14, then lost the third set 19-25. In the fourth set, New Kent held the early lead until Smithfield tied the match at 8-8, then pulled out to as much as a 5-point lead at 12-17. But the Lady Trojans rallied back to finally tie the set 21-21 before closing out the match with an ace from Lexi Powell and attacks from Courtney Carter and Fallon Greenawalt. Leah Rounds led the New Kent attack with 14 kills, followed by Greenawalt with 10 and Powell and Carter with six each. Setters Mackenzie Loveland & Hannah Perkins contributed 22 and 17 assists respectively while Libero Abby McLaughlin recorded 27 digs.
