At the conclusion of the 2024 high school football season, it looked like
Washington (Massillon, Ohio) might have a shot at catching
Valdosta (Ga.) for the top spot as the nation's all-time winningest program. Instead, the Tigers caught the Wildcats during the off-season.
Washington began the 2024 season four wins behind Valdosta, which had held the position as the nation's all-time winningest program since the early 1980s. With an 11-3 record last year compared to Valdosta's 9-3 mark, the Ohio school climbed to 959 wins, giving the Tigers a chance to edge ahead of Valdosta and its 961 all-time wins during the 2025 season.
However, researching high school football wins is a never-ending project. With the sport nearly 140 years old, it's not uncommon for historians to locate wins and losses for teams that had not been previously reported. Newspaper accounts of high school football games prior to World War II were often spotty, making all-time win records more fluid than static.

Valdosta, shown here prior to kickoff in its last state championship victory in 2016, has been the nation's all-time wins leader since the early 1980s. The Wildcats will have to win big in 2025 to hold on to that spot. (PHOTO: Cecil Copeland)
Such is the case for Valdosta. After finishing the 2024 season with 961 all-time wins, the Wildcats had their all-time total drop to 959 after research by Loren Maxwell, longtime Georgia high school football historian, moderator and founder of the website Georgia High School Football History, which tracks all-time scores for several Southern states. The issue for Valdosta was forfeit wins.
Forfeit wins are often the hidden currency when it comes to all-time win-loss totals. Two teams schedule a game and for some reason the game is canceled. The team that had to cancel may take a forfeit loss while the other team takes a forfeit win. But not always. It often depends on the circumstances. It's also not a sure thing that these forfeits are reported to a media outlet to go on the record.
This is the case for Valdosta. According to Maxwell, two games against Moultrie, both wins played decades apart, could not be substantiated. The first, in 1920, never had a score associated with the win. Maxwell said that no score could be found and that the contest is not listed as a forfeit. The win has thus been eliminated and Maxwell states that Valdosta concurs with the decision.
The second Moultrie game occurred in 1942 and is listed as a forfeit win. Maxwell states that newspaper accounts of the game list it as a canceled game, not a forfeit. Moultrie reportedly called off the game due to a disagreement regarding how to split gate receipts. No forfeit is mentioned in the story.

According to Maxwell, Valdosta is doing a review of its records and it reportedly has stated to Maxwell and Todd Holcomb of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, that it has documentation to prove the forfeit. The documentation is still pending, so stay tuned. Until then, the win has been removed from Valdosta's schedule.
Other media sites may also list Valdosta with 925 all-time wins. This is due to four forfeit losses in 1929 that Valdosta counts on its own football website as wins.
The Wildcats thus begin the 2025 season tied with Washington in wins at 959, but still hold the top spot on the list due to the fewer number of losses. Valdosta has 269 all-time losses while Washington has 302.
The two teams also top our list of the top 500 all-time winningest high school football programs in the nation. The list is drawn from various sources and the teams are listed with their overall record along with last year's record.
Close on the heels of both Valdosta and Washington is
Male (Louisville, Ky.), which begins the year two wins behind the leaders at 957. Meanwhile
Mayfield (Ky.) is four games back at 955. Valdosta, Male and Mayfield all went 9-3 last year while Washington was 11-3.
MaxPreps will be tracking the wins and losses for all four teams throughout the school year as the all-time wins lead could change hands multiple times during the season.
The list
of winningest programs has been compiled using a variety of sources. To borrow a quote from scientist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton, it was built "standing on the shoulders of giants." Among those sources include the work of the following:
• Loren Maxwell with
Georgia High School Football History, providing historic scores for Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, South Carolina and Louisiana.
• Kev Varney and Tom Sikorski in Illinois with their "Project 300" tracking all teams with 300 or more wins in the Land of Lincoln.
• Rick Baker of
FourSeasonsFootball, with scores for Virginia, West Virginia and parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland and Tennessee.
• David Parker of
Alabama High School Football Historical Society, with scores for Alabama, Mississippi and Tennesse.
•
Pennsylvania Football News by Tom Elling and Rich Vetock, with all-time records for the Keystone State.
•
Texas High School Football History by Joe Lee Smith and currently edited by Jerry
Forrest with all-time records for all teams in the Lone Star State.
• Thomas "Mike" Goddard of
Kansas High School Football History with scores for Kansas. He is also the authority on Missouri.
• Dan and Joe Engler of
AlmanacSports, charting the history of football in Indiana.
• Sheldon Shealer of
Maryland Football Foundation.
• Kevin Patrowsky from
Wisconsin with his website
WiHiFootball and his book "The Great Teams."
• Mark Tennis of
Cal-Hi Sports with his coverage of the Golden State and his continuation of the state record book that includes the voluminous work of his uncle, the late Nelson Tennis, as well as win totals from the late California high school football historian Bruce McIntosh.
• David McKnight and his website
McKnight's American Football with rankings for high school football back to the 1880s.
• Doug Calvert of
Oregon High School Sports Records, along with the help of longtime historians Mal Van Meer and Larry Moulton.
State association websites and record books have also provided data.
The biggest
contributor to the list is the website
Football Friday Night, which
continues the work of Robert Fawcett. Starting around the 2000,
Fawcett attempted to find the winningest programs in the nation. He
stopped working on the project in 2009 but Football Friday Night has
taken over maintaining the records since, although totals listed do not currently include an update from the 2024 season.
One note
regarding the top 500 list below is that various sources often have different
all-time totals. Football Friday Night, may have different totals than the NFHS record book, which might have different totals
than independent researchers like Four Seasons Football and Georgia
High School Football History. MaxPreps has attempted to corroborate
totals to the best of our ability. In most cases, we go with the most
local source. When no local sources were available, we deferred to
Football Friday Night. In some cases, we changed sources due to new
corroboration.
Schools may appear on
the Football Friday Night list but they are not included on the top 500. That
could be because the school in question has consolidated with other
schools over the years. MaxPreps tries to only include schools that have
not consolidated. Schools that lost students due to
the opening of a new school and then changed names are included (i.e.
Medford became North Medford). Teams that are tied for number of wins
are ranked in order by winning percentage.
