Virginia High School Volleyball - Grafton over New Kent
August 29, 2024: New Kent, VA 23124 In Thursday's league challenge, the visiting Grafton Clippers volleyball team scored a 3-1 triumph over the New Kent Trojans.
The Clippers (2-0) will now prepare for their challenge against Bruton (Williamsburg, VA). The Panthers come into the Bay Rivers challenge with a 2-0 record. In their last challenge, Bruton beat Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA), 3-0, in a league challenge.
Next, the Trojans play the Warhill Lions (Williamsburg, VA) in a Bay Rivers challenge, on Tuesday, September 3. New Kent will attempt to upgrade on its 1-1 season record. The Lions come into the challenge with a 1-1 record after their 3-1 league loss to Poquoson (Poquoson, VA).
Match Summary
The Lady Trojans lost a four-set match to 2023 Class-3 state runner-up Grafton. Grafton prevailed in the first set 25-15, capitalizing on multiple 14 NK serving, hitting, and net errors. However, the Lady Trojans fought back in the second set, cutting their hitting and serving errors to 6, upping their kills and aces to 16, and hitting efficiency to .324. The first half of the third set was the most competitive, with neither team achieving more than a two-point lead until Grafton extended the lead by three points at 13-10. New Kent managed to hold the Grafton lead to 2-3 points until Grafton finally extended it to four points at 17-21. New Kent closed to 18-21 on a Leah Rounds hit, but two consecutive digging errors and a ball handling error gave Grafton game point. New Kent closed to 20-24 before a service error gave Grafton the set 25-20. Grafton controlled the fourth set, taking an early 1-8 lead. NK closed to two at 14-16, but the Clippers pulled ahead to win the final set 25-17.
